The Australia Institute Webinar Series: A Plastic Free Australia

Is recycling actually just a form of greenwashing? Globally, plastics generate around 1.8 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. In Australia, only 18% of plastics are recycled and the nation’s recycling targets are far from being reached.

It’s been reported that each person ingests about a credit card size in plastics each week. That’s roughly 5 g a week or an average of 100,000 g of microplastics every year. The implications of all this plastic on our health is a critical issue.

These are some of the topics that will be discussed in our plastics webinar.. We’ll share ideas for reducing plastic use in your life. And also increase momentum towards phasing out plastics or potentially shifting the country towards recycling targets and a circular economy that would minimise plastic waste and lead to materials being recovered, reused, recycled and reprocessed.

Join:

  • Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, Executive Director and Founder of the Plastic Free Foundation

  • Dr Deborah Lau, CSIRO’s Ending Plastic Waste Mission Lead

  • Associate Professor Thava Palanisami, Environmental Plastics Innovation Cluster(EPIC), The University of Newcastle

  • Nina Gbor, Director of the Waste & Circular Economy Program at the Australia Institute

for an interactive discussion on plastic waste in Australia.

The Australia Institute Webinar Series: Food Waste in Australia

In 2018 – 2019, 7.6 million tonnes of food were wasted in Australia or an average of 312 kg per person was wasted that year.

In terms of economic loss, this equates to $19.3 billion and an average of $2000 – $2500 per household being lost every year. The irony of Australia’s food waste problem is that half a million households experience food scarcity every day due rising costs of living. And 8-10% of greenhouse gas emissions are from food waste. This makes it a significant contributor to the climate crisis.

Join us in a conversation with Oz Harvest’s founder & CEO, Ronni Khan; Paul West, Cofounder of Grow It Local, TV Host, Author, Chef;  and Nina Gbor, Australia Institute’s Director of Circular Economy & Waste as they delve into the core of the issue. The webinar will also explore ways households can reduce waste while saving costs, alternative systems, and how we can collectively change the food system to reach the government’s target of halving Australia’s food waste by 2030.

The Australia Institute Webinar Series: The War On Waste with Craig Reucassel

7 years ago, The ABC’s groundbreaking environmental series War On Waste firmly placed the nation’s attention on Australia’s waste issues and solutions.

It sparked local and national systems change in the country. This year the award-winning series returned with a new season highlighting how far Australia has come in the war on plastic, food and fashion waste.

The new season investigated recycling in Australia, brought to light new waste topics, challenged the lack of corporate accountability towards their own waste and explored what government can do to curb the waste tide. And most importantly the season provides straightforward solutions to help us all shift the status quo with Australia’s waste crisis.

Join Craig Reucassel, host and producer of ABC TV’s War On Waste and Nina Gbor, Director Circular Economy & Waste Program at the Australia Institute, for a discussion on how we can all turn the tide to resolve Australia’s waste crisis as individuals, within communities and with our local and national government.

ANZ Green Ambassador Summit: Curating a sustainable fashion future

The fashion industry is booming, and is leaving an astonishing trail of environmental and social repercussions in its wake. Pollution, water-use, carbon emissions, microplastics, human rights and gender equality are all impacted by the clothes we choose to buy. As consumers, we can play a huge role by re-considering our shopping habits and advocating for a shift in how we approach fashion, to incorporate more sustainable practices.

Chaired by ANZ Green Ambassador Country Sponsor for Indonesia, Jodi West, join Anthony Chesler, CEO of Thread Together, to learn more about the impact of clothing manufacturing and the problem of excess fashion, and what they are doing to tackle it. We’ll also hear from Nina Gbor of Eco Styles, who will talk about how we can turn the tide at national, community and individual levels. She will inspire you to re-think your fashion consumption habits with a restyling demonstration, to help you get more out of your wardrobe, to reduce clothing waste from going to landfill.
